# Open source Brand24 alternative: looot-mentions

The code is MIT open source. The data is not free and not self-hosted: every real run calls looot and pays per call at the catalog price shown before the run. Listen for your brand and keywords across Reddit, X, Hacker News, news, YouTube and the web.

## Short answer

looot-mentions is an MIT-licensed web app and CLI. Give it keywords and brand names and it searches Reddit, X, Hacker News, news, YouTube and the web through looot, removes duplicates, tags each mention by source, sentiment and intent, and shows a feed with filters and a daily digest. The code is open source. The data is paid per looot call.

## What it does

It searches six sources per keyword and keeps a mention only when it contains the keyword and none of your exclusion words. It dedupes by canonical URL and by normalised title, so a story syndicated under many URLs counts once.

Sentiment comes from word lists and shows the words that produced the label. Intent (complaint, question, recommendation request or comparison) comes from patterns. Both lists live in a config file you can edit.

The CLI writes only what is new since the last run to a markdown digest grouped as needs a reply, comparisons and everything else. It can run from a daily GitHub Actions cron. A cap per run and a cap per month stop spend.

This is the job that products such as Brand24 and Mention do.

## Commands

git clone https://github.com/loootai/looot-mentions && cd looot-mentions
npm install --ignore-scripts
npm run demo
npm run mentions -- --demo --out digests-demo --data data/demo.json
npm run mentions -- --config mentions.yaml --dry-run
export LOOOT_TOKEN=...
npm run mentions -- --config mentions.yaml

## Facts

- Job: Listen for your brand and keywords across Reddit, X, Hacker News, news, YouTube and the web.
- License: MIT
- Language: TypeScript
- Needs: Node.js 22.13 or newer
- Needs: A looot token with the scopes runs.execute, catalog.read, runs.read and usage.read, for real runs only
- Needs: A funded looot balance, for real runs only
- Demo mode: Yes. npm run demo shows sample data for invented brands, and --demo writes the same data as files. Both need no token and make no looot call.
- Repository: https://github.com/loootai/looot-mentions

## Endpoints it calls

- scrapecreators: scrapecreators-reddit-search (reddit_post_search), Reddit posts
- anyapi: anyapi-run-twitter-search (x_post_search), X posts
- serper: serper-search (google_serp_organic), Hacker News (Google results limited to that site) and the web
- serper: serper-news (news_search), News
- tikhub: tikhub-api-youtube-web-search-video (api_youtube_web_search-video), YouTube videos

## What it does not do

- looot has no Hacker News provider, so that source is a Google search limited to the site. It finds stories and discussions Google indexed, not every comment.
- It has no Facebook or Instagram search by keyword, no podcasts, no forums beyond Reddit and Hacker News, no share of voice, no influence scores and no alerts on volume spikes.
- Sentiment from word lists misses sarcasm, and a request to recommend a tool reads as neutral on purpose. Treat labels as a first pass and check the matched words.
- Response parsing was written from provider documentation and fixtures. The README says it was not checked against a recorded paid response, and the daily workflow was linted but not run.
- The web app has no sign-in. Put it behind your own access control if you host it.

## Run it with an agent

Use looot to find new mentions of my brand and my competitors. Read https://looot.ai/skill.md first. Then clone https://github.com/loootai/looot-mentions, write my keywords into a YAML file, run its dry run and show me the quote and the caps. Run it only after I say yes, and lead the digest with the mentions that need a reply.

## What does looot-mentions do?

It searches Reddit, X, Hacker News, news, YouTube and the web for your keywords through looot, removes duplicates, tags sentiment and intent and writes a daily digest of what is new.

## Is looot-mentions free?

The code is free under the MIT license. The data is not. Every real run is a set of paid looot calls at the catalog price, quoted before the run. Demo mode and the dry run cost nothing.

## Which sources does it search?

Six: Reddit, X, Hacker News, news, YouTube and the web. Hacker News is a Google search limited to that site, because looot has no Hacker News provider.

## What does a run cost?

One call per keyword per source. The table on this page shows the live catalog price of each endpoint, and the dry run prints the plan and total. A cap per run and a cap per month stop spend.

## How accurate are the sentiment labels?

They come from word lists and show the words that produced the label. They miss sarcasm and are a first pass. Check the matched words before you act.

## What does it not do?

It has no Facebook, Instagram or podcast search, no share of voice and no alerts on volume spikes. The README says parsers were not checked against recorded paid responses.

## Can I try it without a looot account?

Yes. npm run demo and the CLI --demo flag use invented brands and need no token. A real run needs a token and a funded balance.

## How do I run it from an agent?

Give your agent the prompt on this page and the setup link https://looot.ai/skill.md. The repo ships a skill that prices the run, asks for a yes and leads with what needs a reply.
