## What it needs

Any text

## What comes back

- word count
- characters with and without spaces
- sentences and paragraphs
- reading and speaking time
- the ten most used words

## Endpoints and providers

None. The tool on the web page runs in the browser and calls no endpoint.

## What it costs

Nothing. The tool on the web page runs in the visitor's browser: no account, no API call and no limit per hour. The prompt above runs the same job from your own looot account with current data, billed per call.

## Essays and assignments

Check a draft against a word limit before you hand it in.

## Blog posts

See the length of a post and the words you lean on most.

## Scripts and talks

Know how long a script takes to read aloud before you record it.

## Many drafts at once

Hand your agent a set of drafts and get every word count in one table.

## How do I count the words in my text?

Paste or type the text in the box at the top of this page. Words, characters, sentences, paragraphs and reading time update as you type.

## What counts as a word?

A run of letters or digits. "Don't", "e-mail" and "2026" count as one word each. Punctuation and symbols on their own do not count.

## How is reading time worked out?

Words divided by 238 words a minute, the average adult silent reading rate for non-fiction in Marc Brysbaert's 2019 meta-analysis. Speaking time uses 183 words a minute, the average for reading aloud in the same study.

## Does it count words in Chinese or Japanese?

Not well. Those languages put no spaces between words, so a whole sentence can count as one word. Use the character count for them.

## What are the top words?

The ten words used most, with how often each appears and its share of all words. Common words such as the, and and of are skipped unless you untick the box.

## Can I check keyword density too?

Yes. The keyword density checker counts two and three word phrases as well and flags any phrase over 3 percent.

## Is my text saved or sent anywhere?

No. The counter runs in your browser and sends your text nowhere.

## Is this word counter free?

Yes. It needs no account and has no limit.
