# WHOIS lookup: run it free, or from your agent

The public WHOIS record of a domain from WhoisXML: registrar, creation and expiry dates, domain age and name servers.

## Prompt

Use looot to look up the WHOIS records of these domains: [domains]. 1. Set up https://looot.ai/skill.md. 2. Find a WHOIS lookup endpoint in the catalog and check its price before you call. 3. Run it once per domain. 4. Return a table of registrar, created date, expiry date and domain age per domain, mark redacted fields as redacted, and give the total cost.

## What it needs

A domain, such as hubspot.com

## What comes back

- registrar
- created, expires and last updated dates
- domain age in days and years
- status codes
- name servers
- registrant organization and country when public

## Endpoints and providers

- whoisxml: whoisxml-whois

## What it costs

The tool on the web page runs live at no cost to you and is limited per hour. The results come from public data through looot. For heavier or repeated use, run the same job from your own looot account: looot bills per call and charges nothing while your agent is idle. The live price comes from the catalog and shows on the web page.

## Check a domain's age

See when a domain was first registered before you trust a site, buy a link on it or sign a deal with it.

## Plan a domain purchase

Read the expiry date and the registrar of a name you want, so you know who to ask and when it may free up.

## Vet a sender

A domain created last week that emails you an invoice is a warning sign. The created date tells you.

## Agent domain checks

Let your agent run a list of domains and return the registrar and age of each one.

## What is a WHOIS lookup?

A query to the public registration record of a domain. The record lists the registrar that sold it, when it was created and when it expires, its status codes and the name servers it points to. Some records also show the owner's organization and country.

## Where does this WHOIS data come from?

From WhoisXML, which reads the registry and registrar records of the domain and returns them in one format. The tool shows the parsed fields, not the raw text.

## Why are the owner's details redacted?

Since GDPR in 2018, most registrars hide the name, address, phone and email of the person behind a domain. The record then says redacted for privacy. This page never shows an owner's name, street, phone or email, even when the record has them.

## How do I check how old a domain is?

Run the domain in the box at the top of this page. The domain age row shows the days since the creation date, and the years row rounds it down.

## How do I find out who owns a domain?

Look at the registrant organization and country rows. When they are missing, the owner hid them. The registrar abuse contact is the official way to reach the registrar about the domain.

## What do the status codes mean?

They are the locks the registry or registrar set on the domain. clientTransferProhibited means it cannot move to another registrar without the owner unlocking it. clientDeleteProhibited and clientUpdateProhibited block deletion and changes.

## Can I look up an IP address or an email?

This page takes domains only. Your agent can send an IP address to the same endpoint, and the IP lookup tool on this site shows the network and location of an IP.

## Is this WHOIS lookup free?

Yes. Each run on this page costs you nothing and is limited per hour. For many domains, your agent runs the same endpoint on your own looot account at the per-call price shown above.

## How do I run this from an agent?

Copy the prompt above into your agent with the looot skill.md link. It picks the WHOIS endpoint, checks the price and returns one row per domain.
